Bass Rock

The Bass Rock rises steeply from the Firth of Forth, an island of hard volcanic rock two kilometres offshore and five kilometres north-east of North Berwick. The flat top is capped by a lighthouse built in 1902, while the lower slopes are sheer cliffs that drop straight into the sea. Seabirds circle constantly above the rock, and in summer the island hosts one of Europe’s largest northern gannet colonies. The only landing place is a narrow inlet on the south side, reached by small boat from North Berwick harbour. From the water the rock appears almost black, its dark stone contrasting with the pale chalk of nearby islands. On clear days it can be seen from Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh and from high points across East Lothian and Fife. The Bass has been a place of retreat and fortification for centuries. In the 8th century the hermit Baldred lived in a cave on the island, later remembered in a ruined chapel named after him. The Lauder family owned the rock from the 14th century and built a castle defended by two curtain walls and a round tower. Scottish kings such as James IV and James VI visited the castle, and in 1316 Robert the Bruce granted the island to the Lauders. After the 17th century the castle served as a prison, and its stone was later used to build the lighthouse. Visitors who land on the Bass find a narrow path winding up the slope to the lighthouse and foghorn. Halfway up stands the roofless ruin of St Baldred’s Chapel, built over the saint’s original cell. The walls of the castle survive in fragments, showing rough basalt masonry and simple fireplaces. Sheep once grazed the grassy summit, and a well provided fresh water for the island’s small communities. The gannets nest on every ledge, their white forms and loud calls filling the air. From the top there are wide views across the Firth to the hills of East Lothian and the coast of Fife.
