Berry Head

Berry Head stands at the southern edge of Tor Bay in Devon, a rugged headland of pale limestone cliffs that drops steeply to the sea. It forms the southern boundary of the wide bay east of Brixham, a small fishing town known for its colourful harbour. The headland is protected as both a national and a local nature reserve, and the coastal stretch to Sharkham Point is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Thin soils, mild air and constant winds shape the land here, creating a place that feels open and exposed. The cliffs are high enough to give wide views across the bay and out to sea. The headland matters because rare plants and animals depend on its conditions. Guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes nest on the cliffs, and the guillemot colony below Southern Fort is one of the largest on England’s south coast. Live CCTV in the visitor centre lets people watch the birds without disturbing them. White rock-rose, small hare’s ear and small restharrow grow here, along with spring gentian and goldilocks aster. Caves shelter greater horseshoe bats, and North Devon cattle graze to keep the right habitat for dung beetles that young bats need. Visitors walk cliff-top paths that lead to the remains of an Iron Age hill fort and later military works built between 1794 and 1804. The old artillery house now shows displays about the area’s history, wildlife and strategic importance. Berry Head Lighthouse and a VOR beacon for air traffic stand on the point, while the former semaphore station once sent signals to Lloyds. The house where poet Henry Francis Lyte lived is now a hotel, and a plaque marks the cricketer Evelyn George Martin’s stays during school holidays. The wind carries salt and seabird calls across the grass and limestone, making the place feel both wild and quietly historic.
