Sharkham Point

Sharkham Point is a rugged headland near Brixham in Devon. It overlooks St Mary’s Bay and lies close to Berry Head Country Park. The area was once part of the Coastguard Walk, where officers patrolled the cliffs. The path rises and falls over soft Devonian shales that have eroded into what was once called Mudstone Bay. Fossils can still be found along the beach below the cliffs. The point was once home to large iron workings, and old adits from 1790 to 1930 remain visible. Many of these remains were later buried when the site served as Brixham’s town tip. Today it is managed as a nature conservation area with fine views along the Heritage coastline. Visitors find a wild coastal landscape with clear views over the sea. The path follows the old coastguard route, winding over eroded shales and past fossil-rich beaches. Remains of the iron workings appear along the way, half-hidden by grass and gorse. The air carries the scent of salt and wild thyme. Berry Head Country Park lies nearby, offering further walking routes.
