Burg Guteneck

Burg Guteneck stands in the village of Guteneck, part of Johanniskirchen in Lower Bavaria. It was a late medieval spur castle built on a ridge above the surrounding land. The site includes a multi-part earthwork with ditches and ramparts covering about 200 by 100 metres. Nearby is the small Filialkirche Mariae Himmelfahrt, once the castle chapel built around 1470. The church still holds a late Gothic high altar with a carved sandstone predella showing the marriage of the Christ Child to Saint Catherine. The castle’s history began with the Ortenburg counts around 1330, though earlier records mention Guteneck as an oppidum in 1302. Owners changed frequently: the Reinholde von Pörndorf family held it from 1317 to 1396, followed by creditors and later the Fraundorfer family in 1410. The Zaunrieder family owned it from 1446 until 1508, then it passed through several hands including the Offenheimer brothers and the von Neuhaus family. By 1680 the Tattenbach counts took over, and in 1802 the Arco-Valley family inherited the estate. The castle fell into ruin and was dismantled after 1830. Today the site is a quiet grassy mound marked by earthworks and shallow ditches. The small church remains in use, its interior showing the fine late Gothic altar piece. A few low stone fragments lie scattered among the grass, hinting at walls long gone. The surrounding fields stretch away gently, with no modern buildings disturbing the view. Visitors walk over the old ramparts and look down into the shallow defensive ditches. The place feels remote, with only the distant sound of farm machinery breaking the silence.
