Former Burgstall, so-called Mohrenstein

The former Burgstall Mohrenstein stands on a narrow, cone-shaped ridge 464 metres above sea level in the Upper Palatinate. It rises about twenty metres above the valley floor of the Floß and is bounded on three sides by steep slopes. A small unnamed stream with two ponds guards the western flank, while the northern side opens onto a saddle leading to higher ground. The site is worth visiting for its well-preserved medieval defences. A four-metre-wide ring ditch encircles the spur, with a two-to-three-metre terrace half way down the slope. On the summit plateau, measuring twenty by fifteen metres, low walls of rough stone mark the outline of a rectangular building. A narrow road cuts into the northern defences, but elsewhere the earthworks remain intact. Visitors find quiet woodland paths that lead to the ridge top. The remains of the ring ditch and outer bank are clearly visible along the southern and western edges. From the plateau there is a wide view over the Floß valley and across to the distant Kronsburg site. The atmosphere is one of open grass and scattered stones rather than grand ruins.
