Cardiff International Sports Village

Cardiff International Sports Village stands on the edge of Cardiff Bay in Grangetown, a former industrial dockland transformed into a freshwater lake. The site sits beside the River Ely where the Taff Vale Railway once built wharves in the 1859 to export Welsh coal. A chain ferry carried dockers across the river until 1900 when the Ely Subway replaced it. The old Railway public house, known as the Red House, guided ships until it was demolished. After the Cardiff Bay barrage turned the area into a lake, planners created a sports village on reclaimed land. The village now hosts Olympic-standard facilities built for London 2012 training camps. The 50-metre Cardiff International Pool opened in 2008 with a ten-lane competition pool and four flume rides. Cardiff International White Water opened in 2010 with a 250-metre pumped course, the UK’s first Olympic canoe slalom track. Ice Arena Wales, opened in 2016, seats over 3,000 for ice hockey matches of the Cardiff Devils. A pedestrian bridge called Pont y Werin links the village to Penarth and completes the Bay circular walk. Visitors find modern sports buildings set beside the water with views across the bay. The pool complex includes a warm-up pool, beach area and gym, while the white-water centre offers rafting and kayaking. Ice Arena Wales holds public skating sessions and elite matches. The bridge provides a quiet route for walkers and cyclists coming from Cogan station. Residential blocks and retail stores stand nearby, and new apartments are planned to extend the village further.
