St Paul's Church

St Paul’s Church stands in Grangetown, a suburb of Cardiff. Built in 1890, it is a parish church of the Church in Wales and is listed at Grade II. The church occupies land donated by Lord Windsor in 1885 and was designed by the Arts and Crafts architect John Coates Carter. Its walls combine Pennant rubble with pink Staffordshire sandstone dressings and include early concrete elements. A chancel was added in 1902, and the building has been protected since 1975. The church is notable for its architectural importance and cultural links. Pevsner’s Buildings of Wales calls it Carter’s “finest” surviving early church, praised for its unusual materials. In 2005 it appeared in the Doctor Who episode “Father’s Day,” where alien Reapers attack during a wedding. A 1920 stained glass window, installed to commemorate the First World War, was to be preserved during partial conversion to housing. Inside, visitors find a nave with concrete-ribbed ceilings and sandstone detailing. The church retains its original pews and a war memorial window showing battle scenes. The chancel and vestry still serve the congregation, who now meet in the adjacent hall. Renovation began in 2023 to repair the roof and floor, though full reopening will follow further consultation. The building remains a quiet landmark in the heart of Grangetown.
