Pfarrkirche Schönbühel

The Pfarrkirche Schönbühel is a former monastery church attached to the Schönbühel monastery. It stands on a steep, narrow rocky outcrop above the Danube in the market town of Schönbühel-Aggsbach. The plain, elongated early Baroque building dates from the 17th century and commands a striking position over the river. Inside, the church is richly furnished in Baroque style. The high altar has a painted altarpiece by A. Rudroff from 1792, with illusionist architecture and painted statues. A life-size gilded Madonna in a curtained niche dates from 1688, and a painting of Saint Rosalie by Martin Johann Schmidt from 1768 sits above. A tower added around 1900 rises at the east end under a tented roof. Below the church, a small Calvary chapel built in 1669 shows the Crucified flanked by the two thieves from the original set. Later statues of the Virgin and John were added a century afterwards. A three-quarter-round terrace beside the choir offers views across the Danube valley.
