Burgruine Schwarzenbach

Burg Schwarzenbach stands as a ruined hilltop fortress one kilometre north-west of the market town of Schwarzenbach in Lower Austria. It crowns the Schlossberg ridge where the Schwarzenbach valley begins, surrounded by rolling wooded countryside. The ruins are protected as a listed monument and remain freely accessible despite dense undergrowth. Inside, metre-high scree and fallen masonry fill the courtyard, and warning signs remind visitors of the danger of collapse. A single surviving chapel marks the heart of the old stronghold. The fortress was probably built late in the 12th or early in the 13th century. It first appears in a 1254 peace treaty between Hungary’s Béla IV and Bohemia’s Ottokar II, when it was awarded to Hungary. In 1337 Hungarian forces under Gespan Leustachius besieged and took the castle within weeks. After a planned exchange for Anchenstein failed, Schwarzenbach finally passed to Austria in 1362. A 16th-century Gothic chapel with pointed windows and the remains of a stair turret still rises twelve metres above the rubble. In the late 16th century the Esterházys remodelled the site into a Renaissance palace, but by 1800 it had been abandoned and was allowed to decay. Visitors today walk through tangled scrub to reach the ruins. The Gothic chapel’s east wall shows the original tracery windows, now partly bricked up, and inside fragments of ribbed vaulting survive. The Esterházy family still owns the site, though only the overgrown foundations and the chapel’s shell remain. A 2016 clearance removed a dangerous arched gateway, and further stabilisation work has been debated. From the ridge there are wide views across the Bucklige Welt hills toward the Rosalien Mountains.
