Erskine Castle

Erskine Castle once stood beside the River Clyde in Renfrewshire, five miles north of Erskine. The Erskine family held the site from 1226 until Sir John Hamilton of Orbiston bought it in 1638. Alexander Stuart, 5th Lord Blantyre, became owner in 1703. By the 18th century the old fortress had vanished. No walls or towers remain today. The estate has long been known for its riverside setting. The Hamilton and Stuart families reshaped the grounds in the 17th and 18th centuries. Their work left no physical castle, yet the land still carries traces of its past. Visitors walk over ground that once bore a stronghold. The surroundings offer quiet walks along the Clyde. A low, grassy rise marks where the castle once rose. Trees line the riverbank, and distant views stretch across the water. The spot invites reflection on the families who lived and worked here centuries ago.
