M898 motorway

The M898 is a short motorway in Renfrewshire, Scotland. It runs for about 1.6 kilometres and links the M8 to the Erskine Bridge. The road has no hard shoulders along its route. Its northern end meets the A726 at the site of the old Erskine Bridge toll booths. Those toll booths were removed in April 2006. The motorway is a simple spur route with only one junction. It carries traffic from the M8 straight to the bridge without any intermediate exits. The lack of hard shoulders means drivers must stay within marked lanes. The route is used mainly by vehicles heading for the bridge or coming from it. At the southern end the M898 meets the M8 near Glasgow Airport. The Erskine Bridge itself spans the River Clyde to the north. The road’s plain design contrasts with the bridge’s longer span. Drivers see the bridge approach as they leave the motorway.
