Cairn Water

Cairn Water is a small river in Dumfries and Galloway, flowing for 18.5 kilometres southeast from its start near Moniaive. It begins where three streams—the Castlefern, Craigdarroch and Dalquhat—come together below the village. The river then passes Kirkland and Newtonairds before joining the Cluden Water. The Cairn Water once marked part of the border between Dumfriesshire and Kirkcudbrightshire. The parish of Glencairn takes its name from the river valley. Locals still call the full stretch from Moniaive to the River Nith the River Cairn. The river winds through quiet farmland and gentle hills in southern Scotland. Its banks are lined with trees and offer peaceful walks. The water flows clear and shallow in many places, making it a quiet spot for visitors. The landscape around the Cairn Water feels unhurried and rural.
