Barjarg Tower

Barjarg Tower stands four miles south-east of Penpont in Dumfries and Galloway. It is an L-plan tower house attached to a 19th-century mansion. The tower probably dates from 1680 and is built of red rubble. It has a crenellated parapet, one open round turret and two conically capped turrets. The castle has four storeys and an attic. The tower was built by John Grierson and his wife Grizel Kilpatrick. Their son inherited the land given by the Earl of Morton in 1587. Later owners included the judge Lord Tinwald and the minister Andrew Hunter. It is recognised as a category B listed building. Inside, the castle has been modernised. The open round turret and conical turrets add character to the structure. The setting remains rural, with views over the surrounding countryside. The tower’s simple design reflects its purpose as a defensible home.
