Hulme Hippodrome

The Hulme Hippodrome is a Grade II listed proscenium arch theatre in Manchester’s former industrial district. Built in 1901 as the Grand Junction Theatre and Floral Hall, it stands on the site of the old Preston Street, now a quiet footpath called Clopton Walk. The building once shared its walls with a smaller sibling, the Playhouse Theatre, and was part of a chain of seventeen theatres owned by William Henry Broadhead. Its stage once hosted live recordings of the first three series of Morecambe and Wise for the BBC. After years as a music hall, repertory theatre, bingo hall and church space, the building has been closed since 2018. The theatre’s significance lies in its role in early broadcasting and variety entertainment. Broadhead’s circuit aimed for quick, clean shows, and the Hulme Hippodrome reflects that ambition in its plain rectangular auditorium and straight seating. Architect Joseph John Alley designed the exterior with white glazed-brick bandings and faded painted lettering, while Broadhead’s builder’s eye shaped the practical stage. The motto “Quick, Clean, Smart and Bright” summed up the house style. Today a campaign group seeks to restore it as a community space, though plans for flats have stalled progress. Inside, the auditorium still shows its theatrical past. Two rows of the dress circle sit under the gallery, supported by pillars, and the gallery front carries a repeating pattern of musical instruments. A plaster figure of Pan perches above the proscenium arch, overseeing the stage where ice shows once froze water overnight. The stage floor could be reinforced for heavy acts, and the dressing rooms sit directly beneath in a row of cubicles. Though entry is now barred, the building’s worn doors and bricked-up stage entrances recall the days when scenery rolled straight from Warwick Street pavement onto the boards.
