River Awe

The River Awe is a short river in Argyll and Bute, flowing from Loch Awe to Loch Etive in the Southwest Highlands. It begins at a barrage where Loch Awe narrows into the Pass of Brander, a deep arm cutting northwest through the hills. The river runs alongside the railway line from Glasgow to Oban and the A85 road for much of its length. Halfway down, both the road and railway cross the river on bridges. Near the end of its journey, the Awe meets Loch Etive beside the village of Taynuilt. The river is worth the journey for its dramatic setting between two lochs. The barrage at its source creates a striking contrast between the still waters of Loch Awe and the flowing river. The Pass of Brander adds a rugged beauty, where the land rises steeply on either side. The railway and road follow the river closely, offering easy access for visitors. Near Taynuilt, the river’s mouth into Loch Etive provides a peaceful transition from freshwater to saltwater. Visitors find a quiet waterway framed by hills and woodland.
