Sixfields Stadium

Sixfields Stadium stands on the west side of Northampton, a modern all-seater football ground built in 1994. It replaced the County Ground where Northampton Town had played since 1897, sharing the cricket ground with Northamptonshire County Cricket Club. The first match at Sixfields ended 1–1 against Barnet, with striker Martin Aldridge scoring the opening goal. The stadium has four stands, the largest being the Jackson Grundy West Stand which seats 3,880 home supporters and houses executive suites and the players’ tunnel. The LCS Dave Bowen Stand honours a former player and manager who guided the club from Division Four to the First Division in the 1960s. The East Stand was expanded in 2025, adding 405 seats and executive boxes for the first time in the club’s history. The stadium has also hosted other teams, including Coventry City during a ground-share in the 2013–14 season. The Persimmon Homes South Stand usually holds away fans but has occasionally accommodated home supporters during high-demand matches. The West Stand features the Weatherbys Boardroom, the LMR Legends Lounge, and Carrs Bar, while players emerge to the music Liquidator. The East Stand’s redevelopment faced delays and financial difficulties, including a £10.25 million loan from the local council that was never fully repaid. Investigations revealed complex disputes between developers and club owners, leaving the stadium’s expansion plans incomplete for years. Visitors find a straightforward football ground with clear sightlines from every seat. The West Stand’s concourses hold bars and hospitality areas, while the East Stand’s half-finished upper tier remains visible from pitch level. The Dave Bowen Stand offers a compact view behind the goal, and the South Stand provides a narrow but lively atmosphere for away supporters. The stadium sits in a quiet residential area, close to the A45 and local amenities. Conference facilities inside the ground host business events outside match days. Despite its troubled past, Sixfields remains a working football venue where fans gather for league and cup games.
