Franklin's Gardens

Franklin's Gardens is a rugby stadium in Northampton, England. It is the home of Northampton Saints and Loughborough Lightning. The ground also serves as a conference and events venue. A notable feature is its own cenotaph, used for Remembrance Weekend ceremonies. The site has evolved from a private garden to a major sporting and social hub. The stadium’s history reflects its growth alongside the sport. Originally Melbourne Gardens, it was renamed in 1887 after John Franklin, a local hotelier. By the late 19th century, it boasted a running track, cricket ground, swimming pool and even a bear pit. The Saints moved there in the 1880s, and the ground has since hosted generations of fans. Later redevelopments turned it into a modern stadium while preserving its heritage. Visitors find a fully enclosed stadium with four main stands. The Carlsberg Stand holds 6,000 people and includes executive boxes and conference suites. The Church’s Stand, opened by club legends, houses dressing rooms and media facilities. The Barwell Stand, newest of all, features a members’ bar and a war memorial. Between stands, the pitch sits within a continuous bowl, offering clear sightlines from every seat.
