Willesden Green tube station

Willesden Green is a London Underground station on Walm Lane in the London Borough of Brent. It stands on the Jubilee line between Dollis Hill and Kilburn stations, serving both London fare zones 2 and 3. The station was originally opened in 1879 on the Metropolitan Railway and was once known as Willesden Green and Cricklewood. In 1939 it began serving the Stanmore branch of the Bakerloo line before transferring to the Jubilee line in 1979. The main station buildings date from 1925 and were designed by Charles Walter Clark, featuring marble white faience and a distinctive diamond-shaped clock. The ticket hall retains rare green tesserae mosaic tiling and is a Grade II Listed Building. The station’s architecture reflects its role as a medium-sized town stop, with original platform buildings still intact. Baker Street and Neasden are the only other stations on the former Metropolitan main line with similar intact buildings. A goods yard once operated to the north until 1966, and from 1933 trains from the north were hauled by London Passenger Transport Board steam locos to Willesden. Between 2022 and 2023, the station trialled an artificial intelligence system to detect fare evasion, anti-social behaviour and injured persons using CCTV cameras. Visitors find a station with side platforms for the Metropolitan line, though these are rarely used today. The Jubilee line provides frequent services, with southbound trains heading to North Greenwich or Stratford and northbound services terminating at Wembley Park or Stanmore. The station is also served by Night Tube trains on Friday and Saturday nights. London Buses routes 260, 266 and 460 stop nearby, providing easy access to the area. The station’s historic ticket hall and mosaic tiling offer a glimpse into its past.
