Alsterdorf
Alsterdorf is a quarter in Hamburg-Nord, a borough of Hamburg, Germany. Its name comes from the river Alster and the lakes it forms in the city centre. The quarter covers 3.1 square kilometres and sits between the Alster to the west and the Ohlsdorf quarter to the east. Part of the large Ohlsdorf Cemetery lies within its boundaries. The river marks the border with the Groß Borstel quarter, while Winterhude lies to the south. The quarter has a population of around fifteen thousand people. In 2006, its population density was over four thousand people per square kilometre. That year, nearly fifteen per cent of residents were children under eighteen, and over twenty per cent were aged sixty-five or older. There were also about five hundred unemployed people and twelve hundred criminal offences recorded. Visitors find a quiet residential area with a few key services. There is one elementary school and two secondary schools. Thirty doctors practise privately here, alongside five pharmacies. The Alsterdorfer Sporthalle once served as Hamburg’s largest indoor sports venue before newer halls opened. The underground railway system provides fast connections across the city.
