Winterhude
Winterhude is a quarter in Hamburg-Nord, a district of Hamburg, Germany. It sits between the Alster and the city’s northern edges, covering 7.6 square kilometres. The area first appears in records from the 13th century, though tools and graves from 1700 BC and 700 BC show much earlier settlement. During the Second World War, Winterhude suffered damage in the Allied bombing raids on Hamburg. The quarter is bordered by several other Hamburg neighbourhoods, including Alsterdorf to the north and Eppendorf to the west. Winterhude is worth visiting for its green spaces and transport links. The 19th-century City Park, Hamburg’s largest public park, lies at its heart and draws locals and visitors alike. Two consulates operate here: Indonesia’s since 1956 and Iran’s since the 19th century. The quarter also hosts the Israelitisches Krankenhaus, a hospital with 180 beds. Public transport is efficient, with underground stations on lines U1 and U3 providing quick access to the city centre. A visitor finds wide tree-lined streets, quiet residential areas and the large Stadtpark with its open lawns and tree groves. The underground stations Sierichstraße, Borgweg and Lattenkamp make it easy to explore. Day-care centres, doctors’ practices and small shops serve daily needs. The park’s paths lead past ponds and open spaces, offering a calm retreat within the city.
