Neubrandenburger Tor

The Neubrandenburger Tor stands in Friedland, a town in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district. It is the largest and best-preserved gate of the old town’s defences, built in the late 15th century as part of a brick fortification. The other two gates, Anklamer Tor and Treptower Tor, were mostly removed long ago. Its late-Gothic brickwork shows careful design: a square tower three storeys high with a pointed archway and four slender octagonal corner turrets capped by steep cones. The outer walls carry blind arcading and stepped gables. Inside, visitors once saw the guardroom with its fireplace, the garderobe turret, the fighting room and its machicolation. The gate once controlled the south-western approach to the town and guarded a castle that no longer remains. After the museum closed in 1984 the building was sealed off and is now inaccessible, leaving its fine details visible only from the outside.
