Sabhal Mòr Ostaig

Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is a Gaelic-medium college on the Sleat peninsula in the south of the Isle of Skye, with an associate campus on Islay. It stands in a quiet corner of the Highlands, where the land meets the sea and the air carries the sounds of Gaelic speech. The college grew from a derelict farm steading at Ostaig, restored by Gaelic activist Iain Noble after he bought the estate in 1972. Noble had seen how linguistic pride revived Faroese culture and wanted the same for Gaelic speakers. His vision led to a library, then a summer school, and finally a full college dedicated to teaching through the language. The college plays a key role in the revival of Scottish Gaelic, offering degree courses only in that language. Its research covers Gaelic history, literature, and sociolinguistics, with projects like the Gaelic Terminology Database and the Dictionary of Scottish Gaelic. Sabhal Mòr works with archives at Armadale and Dunvegan Castles and collaborates with institutions in Ireland, Wales, and Nova Scotia. It hosts writers and artists, runs media courses, and manages the national folklore project Tobar an Dualchais. The £8-million Fàs centre supports creative industries, linking tradition with modern media. Visitors find a working college set among hills and sea lochs, where classrooms sit beside studios and residences. The Ostaig Campus has teaching spaces, a dining hall, and a television studio built in the 1990s. Nearby, the library holds important Gaelic collections, and the college’s events bring together speakers, musicians, and learners. The landscape around Sleat is calm and open, with views across to the mainland and the islands. Here, language and place come together, offering a quiet but powerful centre for Gaelic culture in the Highlands.
