Museum Großauheim

The Museum Großauheim stands in the Hanau district of Großauheim. It occupies a former electricity works and public bathhouse built in 1906. The building sits beside the old cemetery, close to the town centre, and is a ten-minute walk from the railway station. The museum is run by Beate Hofmann and covers about 1 300 square metres. Its main focus is industrial history, with large displays of farm machinery and steam engines. A separate section shows how Großauheim’s economy grew after the arrival of the railway in 1848 and the opening of the Hanau river port in 1924. Two local artists, August Gaul and August Peukert, have their own galleries on the ground and first floors. Visitors find a reconstructed steam hall, a former fire station turned into a gallery, and changing exhibitions in the rear wing. The museum keeps rooms for school programmes and hosts steam-engine demonstrations on special days. A small café and the meeting rooms of the local history society share the building.
