Büchelstein

The Büchelstein is a mountain in the Bavarian Forest, rising to 832 metres. Its slopes overlook the Lallinger Winkel to the east and the village of Grattersdorf to the north. Near the summit stands a lookout rock with a large cross and sweeping views across Lower Bavaria. On clear autumn days with föhn winds, the northern Alps appear from the Dachstein to the Zugspitze. Hang-gliders also launch from the summit when thermals are right. The mountain gave its name to the local Pichelsteiner Eintopf, a hearty stew. In 1839 the Grafenau Landrichter Jakob Strelin organised the first Büchelstein Festival, later moved to Grattersdorf. Short paths from Grattersdorf, Kerschbaum or Langfurth lead to the top. The E8 long-distance path passes close to the lookout rocks. Visitors find a forested climb rewarded by wide panoramas. The summit cross marks the highest point, where hang-gliders prepare for take-off. On calm days the Alps appear in the distance. The surrounding villages offer quiet walks and local food. The mountain remains a quiet spot for nature and views.
