Brotjacklriegel

The Brotjacklriegel is a mountain in the Bavarian Forest, rising to 1,011 metres. It lies near the villages of Schöfweg, Zenting and Grattersdorf in the Sonnenwald region. A legend links the name to a baker who hid here during the Thirty Years' War. Surveyors under Napoleon later recorded the name after misunderstanding a local phrase. The mountain is also called Broad Hunter’s Sill in Bavarian dialect. A viewing tower was first built in 1839 by a priest and two innkeepers from Langfurth. The present 27-metre tower dates from 1924 and still stands at the summit. A TV and radio transmitter operated by Bayerischer Rundfunk shares the top with a smaller tower run by the Bavarian Forest Club. Clearance cairns covered in moss appear on the eastern slope above Daxstein. The Jackl hikers’ car park above Langfurth marks the start of a two-kilometre trail called the Sonnenwald Nature Trail. The path has ten stations that explain the forest and its wildlife. Visitors reach the summit and its towers after a gentle climb through mixed woodland. Views extend across the rolling ridges of the Bavarian Forest.
