Loch Duich

Loch Duich is a sea loch on Scotland’s north-west coast in the Highlands. It stretches inland from the Isle of Skye and meets Loch Long and Loch Alsh at its mouth. The loch’s steep, wooded sides rise from dark water that reflects the peaks of the Five Sisters ridge. Small crofting settlements line the shore, their white houses scattered among heather-covered hills. The water is calm in sheltered bays but can surge where currents meet at the loch’s narrow entrance. The name comes from the Gaelic for ‘black loch’, describing the deep water’s shadowed depths. The loch has a history of hardship and resilience. In 1719 British troops burned homes along its banks before the Battle of Glen Shiel. Fishing once struggled here too; a 1907 report called catches ‘practically nothing doing’, with only herring and saithe landed after years of failure. Yet the loch’s waters now shelter rare flame shell beds and burrowed mud, protected since 2014 as a Marine Protected Area. Legends still linger, like the tale of three seal-maidens who danced on the sand until their skins were stolen by fishermen. Visitors find a landscape of quiet beauty and layered stories. Eilean Donan Castle stands where the three lochs meet, its ruins framed by water and hills. Walkers follow paths along the shore, past crofts and through woods that glow purple with heather in late summer. The loch’s still surface often mirrors the sky, turning cloud and sunlight into moving pictures. At dusk the peaks catch the last light, while seals may surface near the castle’s old causeway. The air carries the scent of salt and pine, and the only sounds are wind, water, and the cry of gulls.
