Dunalastair Water

Dunalastair Water is a man-made reservoir in Perth and Kinross, set between Loch Rannoch and Loch Tummel along Strath Tummel. It was created in 1933 by damming the River Tummel as part of the Tummel hydro-electric power scheme. The reservoir covers 165 hectares, stretching 2.5 kilometres long and 800 metres wide at its broadest point. High ground flanks the loch, with Beinn a' Chuallaich to the north and Schiehallion to the south. Roads run along both shores, the B846 on the northern side and a minor road from Kinloch Rannoch on the southern. The Dunalastair estate sits on the northern bank, adding a historic touch to the landscape. The loch is famous for excellent wild trout fishing and is recognised as one of the best locations in the United Kingdom for the sport. Its shallow waters, averaging just 1.5 metres deep, warm quickly and support abundant insect life, attracting large brown trout that feed mainly at night. Fishing is permitted only from boats, and outboard motors are banned to protect the environment. The site is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest over 241.6 hectares, home to birds such as bitterns, grey herons, egrets, and various warblers. A fish ladder with 18 pools allows migratory fish to pass the dam. Visitors find a narrow, wooded glen at the loch’s head, framed by steep slopes and tranquil waters. The dam has two floodgates and spillways to manage water flow into the River Tummel. An open concrete aqueduct, 15 metres wide, carries water five kilometres to the hydroelectric power station at Loch Tummel. The surrounding area offers peaceful walks along the shorelines, with views of the high hills and opportunities to spot diverse birdlife. The reservoir’s blend of natural beauty and human engineering makes it a quiet but rewarding destination for nature lovers and anglers alike.
