Wiener Internationale Gartenschau 74

The Wiener Internationale Gartenschau 74 was a garden festival held in Vienna. It took place on a former silent-film recording field in the south of the city. The site was chosen for its size and flat terrain. In 1969, architect Erich Hanke won a design competition and formed teams of landscape architects from several countries. Their best ideas were combined to shape the grounds. A monorail once carried visitors around the exhibition but was later removed. The event was organised under the auspices of the International Association of Horticultural Producers. It followed the earlier Wiener Internationale Gartenschau 64, held ten years before. The festival aimed to celebrate horticulture and create a lasting public park. Many designs from the competition were realised in the final layout. The show became the second international horticultural exposition in Vienna. Visitors today find a large park created for the festival. The grounds include varied plantings and landscaped areas from different countries. Paths wind through the green spaces, offering routes for walking and relaxation. The park remains a popular place for locals and tourists alike. Its origins as a garden show are still visible in the layout and plant choices.
