Burgruine Stierberg

The Burgruine Stierberg stands above the village of Stierberg, a western district of Betzenstein in Upper Franconia. It rises on the Schlossberg ridge, a long, wooded rock outcrop that stretches from northeast to southwest, with sheer drops on most sides. The ruins sit on the saddle between the ridge’s highest peaks, around 580 metres above sea level. A marked path leads from the village up to the site, passing the nearby Burg Betzenstein to the east. To the north lie the ruins of Leupoldstein and Leienfels, while Wildenfels, Strahlenfels, Spies and Riegelstein once stood to the south. The site is worth visiting for its well-preserved medieval layout and the traces of its turbulent past. The upper castle occupied a narrow rock platform, defended by a ring wall and a probable bergfried, though only fragments remain. A large mural remnant, about eleven metres long and six to eight metres high, shows the former great hall’s outer wall, reinforced with buttresses. A second, smaller hall may have stood nearby, along with a cistern now lost. The lower castle, below the ridge’s northwest face, contains the 1778 vogt’s house and the remains of a granary and other buildings. Visitors find a striking rock landscape shaped by centuries of defence. The upper ward’s sheer cliffs drop up to twenty metres on three sides, with a steep climb of eighteen metres on the approach. A natural cave runs through the rock, widened in medieval times and once used for storage. Three original entrances served the cave, though two are now blocked. A small square opening marks the southern exit, guarded by a short shield wall that once led to a narrow staircase climbing between the ridge and an outlying rock tower. The lower ward’s round tower, six metres tall and built of rubble, still stands on its own rock pedestal, its arched entrance reached by ladder. The whole ridge offers wide views across the Franconian Switzerland countryside.
