Burgstall Strahlenfels stands on a rocky ridge above the village of Strahlenfels in the Franconian Switzerland hills. The remains lie on a west-pointing spur of Schlossberg, 15 metres above the settlement and about 6.5 kilometres north-north-east of Simmelsdorf. The site is surrounded by other former medieval castles, including Wildenfels to the north-west and Hiltpoltstein further west.

The ruins recall a power struggle in the 13th and 14th centuries between the Strahlenfels and Wildenstein families. After changing hands several times, the castle passed to Emperor Charles IV in 1360 and served as a Bohemian administrative seat until 1368. Military events, including the First Margrave War in 1450, left parts of the structure damaged. By the late 16th century the buildings were no longer maintained and the site was abandoned.

Today only a few stretches of wall remain on the flat summit, together with a small circular cistern. The exposed rock face on the north side is used as a climbing crag, while the top offers wide views across the valley. A narrow path leads up from the south, beginning with a seven-step rock-cut staircase. Below the main spur a small cave, once walled off, served as storage for the castle’s occupants.
