Gröninger Bad

The Gröninger Bad stands in Magdeburg’s Salbke quarter on Gröninger Straße. Designed by city architect Johannes Göderitz, the building opened in 1927 as a public wash-house and library. Its three linked sections rest on oak piles and show the clean lines of New Objectivity architecture. The bath once housed twenty-five showers and twenty-four tubs, while the north wing sheltered a library and the caretaker’s flat. After floods in 1940 and 2013, the city handed it to Aktion Musik in 1992. The Verein turned it into a music and media centre where young people learn studio skills and stage concerts. Visitors today find a 200-seat hall, an eighty-seat live club, two recording studios and two rehearsal rooms. Tokio Hotel were discovered here in 2003, and the centre still runs song-writing courses and video productions. The red-brick exterior with white joints and flat roofs remains unchanged.
