Schloss Alteglofsheim

Schloss Alteglofsheim stands in the village of Alteglofsheim in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria. The building began as a medieval castle in 1240 and was later transformed into a grand residence. Its late-Gothic core includes a 35-metre-high keep, while later additions show Renaissance and Baroque styles. The castle’s history reflects the changing fortunes of its noble owners. The Eglofsheim family gave the place its name in the 10th century. The Parsbergs held it from 1480 to 1573, then the Königsfelds enlarged and decorated it in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Asam brothers added the Ovalsaal in the 18th century, and the Thurn und Taxis family owned it in the 19th. After wartime neglect, the Free State of Bavaria restored the building for the University of Regensburg and later for the third Bavarian Music Academy. Visitors find a late-Gothic keep rising above the rooftops. The staircase hall shows delicate rococo stucco and once held a ceiling fresco by Nikolaus Gottfried Stuber. The eight Schönen Zimmer have elegant ceilings designed by François de Cuvilliés and executed by Johann Baptist Zimmermann. The Kaisersaal ceiling features figures of the four continents and a grand painting of Emperor Leopold I. In the northern wing, the Asam-Salettl presents Cosmas Damian Asam’s Apollo on the Sun Chariot surrounded by night fleeing and Mars and Venus above.
