Schloss Haus
Schloss Haus stands in the village of Neueglofsheim near Thalmassing in the Upper Palatinate. It is a small private castle set in a six-hectare park. The site is protected as a monument and contains remains of a medieval castle. The castle began as a noble residence built in 1314 by the Eglofsheim family. Over the centuries it passed through many hands, including the Nussbergers, Bavaria’s dukes, and the Thurn und Taxis family. After damage in the Thirty Years’ War it was rebuilt and enlarged as a summer retreat for monks. In the 18th century the present four-winged palace was constructed around a central courtyard. Visitors find a four-storey building with a grand façade closing the south-west side of the 700-square-metre courtyard. The north-west wing houses the castle chapel and kitchens. The north-east wing, once stables, is called the Cavaliers’ Building. A vaulted passage links it to the main palace. Beyond the courtyard lie farm buildings: a manor yard, a mill, workers’ houses and a summer cellar. The park contains ancient trees, meadows and a bee house. Nearby stands the giant Sankt-Wolfgangs-Eiche oak.
