Wasserkopf

The Wasserkopf is a 1,442-metre peak in the Ybbstaler Alps, straddling the border between Lower and Upper Austria. It forms part of the Hegerberg ridge, which runs alongside the Ybbs valley and the Enns valley. The mountain shares its ridge with the Aubodenkopf and other summits, creating a striking skyline. The climb offers varied routes and wide views across the surrounding countryside. In winter, when snow conditions allow, ski mountaineers make the ascent. Near the summit stands a small cross erected in 2007. Below the southern slopes lies the Ziegelauer Alm, a working alpine pasture with a hunting lodge. The route to the top passes through quiet forests and open meadows. From the summit there are sweeping vistas over the Ybbs and Enns valleys. The area remains little developed for mass tourism, so walkers often enjoy solitude. The contrast between gentle lower slopes and the rocky crest adds to the appeal.
