Hegerberg

The Hegerberg is a forested ridge stretching between the Ybbs valley in Lower Austria and the Enns valley in Upper Austria. It runs roughly thirteen kilometres from northeast to southwest, passing through Hollenstein an der Ybbs and Weyer. The highest point is the Lärmerstange, while nearby summits include the Hochdreizipf and the Saugrabenspitze. Foresters and hunters make regular use of the Hegerberg. A network of forest tracks criss-crosses the slopes, and several hunting huts lie scattered across the area. Old alpine names like Ziegelauer Alm and Kranzelbaueralm recall past summer farms. Walkers rarely follow the ridge itself, though a long day’s route from Hollenstein an der Ybbs to Schönau an der Enns crosses the crest and offers wide views. Geologically the Hegerberg shows a folded structure called the Oisbergmulde. The flanks are mainly hard Hauptdolomit, while younger Jurassic limestones and Lower Cretaceous Schrambach rocks appear near the crest. To the west the Weyerer Bögen gently swing the fold axis southward.
