Callendar House

Callendar House is a grand mansion set in the middle of Callendar Park in Falkirk, central Scotland. The oldest part is a 14th-century tower house, but most of what stands today comes from a 19th-century remodelling in French Renaissance style with Scottish baronial touches. The frontage stretches for 300 feet, making it the largest historical building in the area. The park itself covers 500 acres of woodland, gardens and open land, and the house sits on the line of the 2nd-century Antonine Wall built by the Romans. The grounds are recognised as a nationally important designed landscape. The house has hosted many famous figures over its 600-year history. Mary, Queen of Scots, Oliver Cromwell, Bonnie Prince Charlie and Queen Victoria all stayed here. The Livingston family, who owned the house for centuries, played key roles in Scottish politics, including acting as regent for the young James II and arranging Mary, Queen of Scots’ marriage to the French Dauphin. Later, William Forbes bought the estate and added French-château roofs, while his descendants kept it for nearly two hundred years. In 1963 the council bought the house and park, and it now operates as a museum. Inside, visitors find two grand reception rooms restored to Georgian style, a working Georgian kitchen with a huge open fire, and period-costumed staff explaining life in the house. Permanent displays cover the Antonine Wall and William Forbes’ Falkirk, while seven temporary exhibitions arrive each year. Outside, the park offers a pitch and putt course, crazy golf, a boating lake and woodland walks. A contemporary art gallery sits within the house, and the Forbes family mausoleum stands in the grounds. The estate also hosts major events, including a firework display attended by over 70,000 people and the Big in Falkirk street arts festival.
