St Andrew's West

St Andrew’s West is a large Church of Scotland congregation in Falkirk’s town centre, standing on Upper Newmarket Street. The church began in 1843 as the Free Church of Falkirk and became St Andrew’s United Free Church in 1900. After the union of the Church of Scotland it took its present name in 1929 and merged with the West Church in 1990. The Gothic building was completed in 1896 to designs by architect James Strang, who is commemorated by a memorial window. The church is listed at category C(s) for its special architectural interest. The congregation follows conservative evangelical preaching and is aligned with the Forward Together group and the Evangelical Alliance. Ministers have included Rev Lewis H Irving from 1843 to 1877 and Rev Dr Robert McGhee from 1972 to 1996. The current minister, Rev Alistair M Horne, has served since 1997. The former Manse, a Victorian house in Maggiewoods Loan, once had tennis courts that were sold in the 1990s. Inside, the church offers a spacious nave with Gothic detailing and stained glass. The memorial window to James Strang is a notable feature near the entrance. The building’s stonework and vaulted ceiling create a calm atmosphere for worship. Outside, the town centre location means it is surrounded by shops and cafes. The church’s spire rises above nearby streets, marking its presence in Falkirk.
