Invergordon Castle

Invergordon Castle stands on the site of an earlier medieval fortress in Rosskeen, Highland. First recorded in the 13th century as Inverbreakie Castle, it was rebuilt and renamed in the early 18th century by Sir William Gordon. The original castle was lost to fire long before. In 1872 a new mansion rose on the foundations, designed for modern comfort. By 1928 even that grand house had been taken down. The estate carries the weight of centuries in its name and setting. The Gordon family’s arrival marked a shift from medieval stronghold to private residence. Fire and demolition removed every stone of the castle, yet the place remains tied to the Gordons. The modern mansion survived barely half a century before it too vanished. Today only the name and the memory of stone walls remain. Visitors find open ground where the castle once stood. A few mature trees mark the edge of the former estate. The flat land stretches toward the Cromarty Firth, offering wide views of water and sky. The site lies close to the A9 road, easy to reach yet quiet. No buildings remain, but the ground still holds the shape of the old mansion’s footprint. The place invites a quiet walk and a look back at Highland history.
