Blacktoft Sands RSPB reserve

Blacktoft Sands is an RSPB nature reserve on the southern bank of the River Ouse in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It sits west of the river’s meeting with the Trent, opposite the village of Blacktoft, where the water turns slightly saline at the start of the Humber Estuary. The land is mostly wetland, with the largest tidal reedbed in England stretching across the site. Managers use six konik horses to graze the reeds, while teams cut and excavate pools to keep the habitat in good condition. The reserve balances water levels and plant growth to support its specialised wildlife. The reserve is best known for rare wetland birds that breed or winter here. Breeding species include the Western marsh harrier, great bittern and bearded reedling, all reedbed specialists, while pied avocets favour the saline lagoons. In winter, hen harriers arrive alongside merlins, peregrine falcons and barn owls. Thousands of Eurasian teal and wigeon also spend the cold months on the reserve. The great bittern first bred here in 2000 and pied avocets in 1992, making the Humber one of the most important sites in Britain for these birds. Passage migrants such as Eurasian spoonbills, spotted redshanks and ruffs also pass through during migration. Visitors walk along paths that wind through the reedbeds and beside the lagoons, where they can watch birds feeding and resting. The saline waters attract specialist invertebrates like the amphipods Gammarus insensibilis and G. chevreuxi, along with the midge Glyptotendipes barbipes. The wide, open landscape offers views across the estuary and the flat surrounding countryside. Reedbeds sway in the wind while wading birds probe the mud for food. The reserve’s quiet atmosphere makes it easy to spend hours observing wildlife without disturbance.
