Whitgift Lighthouse

Whitgift is a small village beside the River Ouse in the East Riding of Yorkshire, six kilometres east of Goole. The river forms the northern edge of the village while fields stretch southwards. A single road runs through the length of the settlement, linking Goole to Scunthorpe. Nearby hamlets include Ousefleet to the east and Reedness to the west. The village has a long history, first recorded in a charter from the 11th century. The village holds several notable landmarks. The Church of Mary Magdalene dates from 1304 and has a clock marked with thirteen instead of twelve. Whitgift Hall is a Georgian manor built in 1704 by the Stephenson family. The lighthouse, a five-storey cream tower with a stone base, was added in the late 19th century to guide ships on the Aire and Calder Navigation. A Methodist chapel also stands in the village. Visitors walk along the riverside path to see the lighthouse and the church. The manor house has bay windows and a fishing pond beside a caravan site. The riverbank offers views of boats heading to and from Goole docks. Fields to the south stretch towards the village of Eastoft. A sparse strip of houses lines the road, giving a quiet, rural feel.
