Berg Castle
Burg Berg stands on the north-eastern edge of the Eifel hills near Mechernich, a small town in the Euskirchen district. It began as a water fortress in the 12th century, built where two old trade roads met. The main building is a free-standing house with a tower, and to the north-east lies the remains of an earlier outer bailey. Beneath the present lowland castle archaeologists have found traces of an earlier stronghold from the late 9th century, visible as a low mound in the valley. The site has a long history. In 699 the Frankish noblewoman Irmina von Oeren gave the estate to Saint Willibrord. By the 14th century the local noble family, the von Bergs, had settled here and turned it into a knightly seat. In the 18th century the property passed to Baron Clemens August von Syberg zu Eicks, who ran it as a tenant farm. Visitors walk through the quiet village of Berg to reach the castle. The free-standing house with its square tower still rises above the surrounding meadows. The outer bailey’s low earthworks show where the first fortification once stood. From the site there are wide views over the gentle Eifel landscape, and the old roads that once brought merchants and travellers can still be traced in the fields below.
