St John's Church, Burwardsley

St John’s Church stands in the small village of Burwardsley, Cheshire, on School Lane. A Grade II listed building, it serves as an active Anglican parish church in the Chester diocese. The church shares its benefice with three nearby churches in Bickerton, Bickley and Harthill. Its earliest parts date from the 17th century, with clear signs of later restorations. The building’s history includes work by Chester architect John Douglas in the 19th century. He added the bell turret in 1871 and designed the chancel around 1878. The church is built from ashlar buff sandstone under a Welsh slate roof, with a three-bay nave and a one-bay chancel. Inside, simple fittings from the 19th century remain, including an organ made about 1840. The churchyard holds two war graves from the First World War. The nave’s windows are mullioned, with arch-headed lights and Y-tracery in the west window. The east window has three round-headed lights, the central one taller than the others. A south porch leads into the building, and the bell turret rises at the west end beneath a pyramidal roof.
