All Saints Church, Harthill

All Saints Church stands in the quiet village of Harthill in Cheshire, North West England. It is a redundant Anglican church, meaning it is no longer used for regular worship but has been preserved as a heritage site. The building is recognised as a Grade II* listed structure, placing it among the most significant historic buildings in the country. Originally a timber-framed chapel was recorded here in 1280, but the present church dates from 1609. In the 19th century it was restored and a new vestry and belfry were added. Today the church is being transformed into a community space while retaining its historic features. The church’s architecture reflects careful craftsmanship from different periods. Built of red and buff sandstone with a Welsh slate roof, it has a simple five-bay nave and chancel under one roof. Inside, a hammerbeam roof spans the space, and square-headed windows with tracery let in light. The east window, made between 1885 and 1887 by Shrigley and Hunt to designs by Carl Almquist, is a notable work of stained glass. The south porch bears churchwardens’ inscriptions from 1611 and 1775, and fragments of a 17th-century screen remain in place. Outside, the churchyard holds further historic monuments. A mausoleum built in 1885 for the Barbour family of Bolesworth Castle stands to the east. Nearby is an 11th- or 12th-century sandstone cross and a sundial dated 1778. Two war graves from the First World War lie north of the church. These structures, like the church itself, are listed for their historic importance, making the site a small but rich record of local history.
