Electoral Palace
The Electoral Palace in Bonn stands in the city centre as the main building of the University of Bonn. It was built between 1697 and 1705 for Prince-Elector Joseph Clemens of Bavaria by the Swiss architect Enrico Zuccalli. The palace replaced an earlier structure destroyed during the Siege of Bonn in the late 17th century. A quadrangular building with corner towers, it encloses an arcaded courtyard and opens to a cour d’honneur. The Hofgarten, a large park in front of the palace, has been a meeting place for students and the site of major political demonstrations. The palace is worth visiting for its layered history and architectural contrasts. Zuccalli’s design reflects the Escorial style, while Robert de Cotte added the Baroque Buen Retiro wing in the early 18th century. A catastrophic fire in 1777 gutted the west wing, and the building suffered further damage in 1944 during the Second World War. Rebuilding efforts restored much of the exterior, though interiors were simplified for university use. The Koblenz Gate, a late Baroque triumphal arch, stands out with its gilded statue of Michael the Archangel and rich decoration. Visitors find a mix of grand architecture and everyday university life. The arcaded courtyard links Bonn’s downtown with the Hofgarten, where students gather. The palace church, rebuilt after the war, preserves its stucco decoration and houses a modern Klais organ. Beethoven once played the organ here as a young musician. The Gallery Wing stretches toward the Rhine and still carries traffic through its historic gates. The palace remains a working seat of learning, its spaces shared between administration and worship.
