Plasnewydd English Calvinistic Methodist Chapel

The Gate Arts Centre occupies a Grade II listed church in Keppoch Street, Roath, Cardiff. The building began as Plasnewydd Presbyterian Church and school hall in the late 19th century. Architect W. Beddoe Rees designed the church in Gothic style in 1901, adding a polygonal bell tower and iron-columned galleries. The school hall, completed in 1886, forms the oldest part of the complex. The centre received its heritage listing in 1998 for its fine detailing and importance. The centre opened in September 2004 after a four-year restoration supported by grants totalling £2.8 million. Rob Cruwys led the refurbishment, preserving original features such as the wooden pews and carved pulpit. The BBC filmed Songs of Praise here in 2006. Founders Rob Lacey and Sandra Harnich-Lacey created a space for arts, education and community use. Inside, the Grand Theatre seats 350 on original pews and a raked gallery floor. The Dance Studio retains the carved pulpit and elaborate columns. Two exhibition galleries occupy the former entrance and a corridor along the south stone wall. The cafe bar sits in the 1886 schoolroom. Weekly workshops include dance, drama and creative writing, while local groups like Performers use the upstairs theatre for Saturday performances.
