Roath Park English Presbyterian Church

St Andrew’s United Reformed Church stands on the corner of Wellfield Road and Marlborough Road in Cardiff’s Roath district. Built in 1900 as Roath Park English Presbyterian Church, the main building replaced an earlier chapel of 1897 that now serves as the church hall. The architects modelled the main doorway on Tintern Abbey and the large west window on Melrose Abbey. Inside, a Harrison & Harrison organ installed in 1900 still fills the space with music. The Grade II* listed building seats 500 on the ground floor and another 200 in the balcony reached from the narthex. The church’s history reflects the growth of Cardiff in the late 19th century. When the city-centre Presbyterian church could no longer cope with rising congregations, a new site was chosen on what was then a country lane. Fundraising proved straightforward and the larger building opened in June 1900. The congregation, originally mostly Scottish, ran a Scout troop in kilts. Wartime losses reduced numbers to around 200, yet the building survived intact even when a nearby bomb exploded on Angus Street. After 1945 the pattern of worship changed, and in 1972 the church became St Andrew’s United Reformed Church following a national union of Presbyterians and Congregationalists. Visitors find a busy community hub. Sunday services draw about fifty people, with children leaving for junior church in side rooms. Remembrance Sunday, Christmas and Easter are marked each year, and a pop-up shop in late autumn sells cards for charity. The hall functions as a canteen, crèche and meeting space, while upstairs rooms offer quiet prayer. Weekly groups include dance, yoga, Zumba, Bible study and a toddler play group. The 25th Cardiff Scout Group meets regularly, and local bands and choirs give concerts in the main church.
