Franziskanerkirche und Kloster Eisenstadt – Esterházy-Gruft

The Franziskanerkirche and Kloster St. Michael stand in Eisenstadt, Burgenland, since the 17th century. The ensemble includes a church and a monastery built by the Franciscans after their first home was destroyed in 1529. The site also holds the Esterházy family crypt, founded in 1705 by Prince Paul I. The buildings reflect centuries of history, from the 17th-century church to later renovations and expansions. The church’s interior features early Baroque altars by Italian artists who worked for the Esterházy court. The Esterházy crypt, rebuilt in the 19th century, contains the tomb of Prince Nikolaus II. and a large marble sarcophagus. The monastery’s museum displays diocesan collections, while the cloister links the church to the crypt. The site’s layered history is visible in its architecture and art. Visitors enter the church through a simple nave with a three-bay choir and a high altar. The sacristy and side chapels hold frescoes and a copy of the Black Madonna of Częstochowa. The Esterházy crypt, reached via the cloister, has a neogothic hall with marble statues and a marble tomb. The west gallery holds an organ from 1760, and the walls display family memorials. The quiet cloister and the crypt’s solemn space offer a contrast to the town outside.
