Kloster Domus St. Mariae

Domus St. Mariae was a Cistercian abbey founded near Steinbeck an der Luhe in 1244. The monks originally lived in log cabins at a pagan prayer site on the Holortsberg, where a rune-carved boulder still stands. Bishop Luder von Borch of Verden ordered the monastery rebuilt and handed it to the Cistercians. In 1253 the community moved to Scharnebeck near Lüneburg after receiving lands from Duke Otto I of Brunswick-Lüneburg. The first site now holds a memorial stone and an explanatory plaque. The monastery’s brief life ended with the Reformation, when it was dissolved like many others. No ruins remain above ground, only the commemorative stone and plaque mark the spot. Benecke’s 1905 study and Brosius’s 2012 article record its history and move. The rune on the Holortsberg boulder is the only visible trace of the first settlement. Visitors find a quiet field beside the Luhe where the monks once worked. A single stone bears the forgotten rune, and a plaque explains the abbey’s story. The surrounding heathland and river create a peaceful setting for reflection on the site’s vanished buildings.
