St Anne's Church, Moseley

St Anne’s Church stands in the leafy suburb of Moseley, a few kilometres south-east of Birmingham city centre. Built in 1874 to a design by Frederick Preedy, it is a parish church of the Church of England and carries Grade II listing. Originally created as a separate parish, the building now shares its ministry with nearby St Mary’s Church in Moseley. The church’s exterior is faced with local brick dressed in stone, giving it a quiet dignity among the surrounding houses. Inside, the space is light and airy, with a single aisle leading to the chancel. The tower rises above the nave, its windows filled with clear glass that lets in steady daylight. The church is worth the journey for its fine Victorian craftsmanship and its place in local history. The architect Frederick Preedy also designed other churches in the Midlands, and this is one of his most complete survivals. The organ, built by Brindley & Foster in 1907 and refurbished in 1984, is still used for services and recitals. Among former vicars is Robert Scott, who served in the late 19th century, and Duncan Strathie, who led the parish from 2015 to 2023. The current vicar, Angela Hannafin, began her ministry in 2024. The organ’s sound has even been captured for virtual use, linking the building to modern technology. Inside, visitors find a spacious nave with simple wooden pews and a tiled floor. The chancel arch frames the communion table, and the east window throws coloured light onto the east wall. The tower contains a ring of eight bells, still rung by local ringers on special occasions. The organ loft sits above the north aisle, its pipes visible behind the case. Outside, the churchyard holds a variety of mature trees and gravestones dating from the late 19th century. The building remains a calm centre for worship and community events in Moseley.
