St Mary's Church, Moseley

St Mary’s Church stands in Moseley, a suburb of Birmingham, as a Grade II listed building with a distinctive stone war memorial in its churchyard. The churchyard faces Oxford Road, and the war memorial shows Christ on the cross carved in stone. The church has been a place of worship for over six centuries, with its origins traced to a papal mandate from 1405. At first, it served as a chapel of ease to Bromsgrove, later becoming a separate parish. The building has undergone many changes, reflecting the growth of Moseley from a small village to an urban suburb. The church’s history includes contributions from notable figures and events. In the early 16th century, stone from Bromsgrove’s parsonage walls was used to build the tower. Repairs and new bells followed under King Henry VIII’s reign. The church survived the 17th century when dissenters were ejected after the restoration of Charles II. By the 18th century, Queen Anne’s Bounty helped establish Moseley as its own ecclesiastical parish in 1755. The building was rebuilt and enlarged in the late 18th century after falling into ruin, with public subscriptions funding the work. Visitors to St Mary’s find a church shaped by centuries of change. The interior reflects Gothic Revival influences, though some elements were later criticised as imitation. The tower houses a ring of eight steel bells, installed in 1874, which replaced the original three. The war memorial in the churchyard remains a striking feature, standing apart from the building itself.
